Packing and Moving Fragile Items

If you have an upcoming move planned, you are likely concerned about transporting fragile items without damage. After all, these items could be fragile, valuable, and sentimental. The goal is to get them from your current location to the destination without suffering any harm Thankfully, at BR Moving, we are committed to helping you achieve this goal and want to offer the following helpful advice on how you should go about packing and then moving fragile items successfully:

Use Small Boxes

For smaller-sized heavy and fragile items, it’s best to use smaller boxes, making them easier to handle. This will serve two main purposes: being easier to handle and preventing the items within the box from shifting into other items and potentially causing harm.

Use Thick, Sturdy Boxes

The thicker and sturdier the moving box the better, especially as it relates to packing and moving fragile items. Keep in mind, that if a box is flimsy or bends, it is virtually impossible to keep the items packed within safe from harm.

Use Layers When Packing

When packaging fragile items to be moved, make sure you layer the bottom of the box with packing material. You can use Styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, foam, packing paper, or even towels to cushion the bottom. Then, place the fragile item inside and back any remaining space with additional material.

Go Heavy on the Tape

Another good idea to ensure that fragile items stay safe when packed is to use extra strips of tape on the bottom. This is especially important if your fragile item is also heavy, as you don’t want the weight of the item to force the box to bend. Instead, reinforce with tape to make a sturdy box even sturdier.

Use Dividers

If you are packing glasses, vases, or other types of stemware, which often fall into the fragile category, use dividers to further protect them inside the box. You can either get boxes that are designed for stemware transportation or purchase cardboard dividers, which can be inserted into moving boxes. Either way, these dividers will keep glasses from colliding with each other and breaking during transport.

Wrap Each Item Individually

It’s also good to wrap each item individually before placing it inside. Ideally, you can wrap loose pieces or even the plates with bubble wrap and then secure them with tape before placing them inside the box. Also, avoid putting too many items in one box; instead, divide them into multiple boxes that are smaller and easier to handle.

Label Them

Make sure that every box that contains a fragile item inside is labeled on the outside as fragile. You can also stack these boxes separately from other items to make sure that special care is used when packing into a moving truck.

Slow Down

Although it’s understandable to want to hurry up and get through the process of packing up, so you can move into your new place, now is not the time to rush. Instead, take your time, pack each item carefully, and ensure that each box is clearly labeled. Slow down and be purposeful with every move to protect the valuables that you have packed within. Taking a little extra time during this phase can save you many headaches down the road throughout the moving process.
